Wear simulation of other joints

Wear resistance is an essential criterion for artificial joints. In contrast to total knee and total hip arthroplasty, where test standards are available and a vast knowledge about wear behavior exists, there is only limited knowledge about wear behavior of other artificial joints.

Wear testing and research in our lab focuses not only on wear testing of total knee and total hip replacements. Simulators in the laboratory offer the possibility to test nearly every artificial joint according to its specific physiological loadings. Using newly developed test standards, the wear behavior of several joints (e.g. ankle joint, shoulder) has been studied. One research focus in our lab deals with the development and enhancement of test standards, particularly considering biomechanics and physiological aspects of the respective joint.
